Heather Spence

  • Started professional life as a dietitian in hospital food service management;
  • Gained a doctorate in food service management (Kansas);
  • Taught food service management at the University of Otago;
  • Moved from the relative comfort of managing hospital nutrition and food services into Food Management (NZ) Ltd;
  • Contributes to New Zealand's post-graduate dietetic education programme;
  • Is an external examiner for the University of Otago's degree and post-graduate food service courses;
  • Gets work-life balance from interests in organic gardening, herbal preparations and other green activities.

Mike Drake

  • Graduated in Electrical Engineering, Leeds Polytechnic;
  • Began his career in real-time computer software, and project management in the UK defence industry, moved to Switzerland, South Africa and finally New Zealand;
  • Worked on aircraft automatic test equipment, and was a software team leader in one of the first applications of digital control (using the first 16bit microprocessor) of jet engines;
  • Also worked in the telecommunications industry, ranging from telex (remember telexes?) to digital microwave systems;
  • Primary involvement in Food Management is development of systems for in-house and client use;
  • Gets work-life balance through tramping and mountaineering, with a little running and biking;
  • Is building a house in his spare time, to go with the alternative energy system he designed and built to power house and office.
